Rural Appalachia seminar visiting faculty members, March 25

Windy Lopez, joined by Karen Proctor, will speak with the Child, Family, and Community Development in Rural Appalachia seminar about Literacy to promote social competence and foster resilience.  Lopez and Proctor will give a public presentation Family Resilience:  Literacy to promote social competence and foster resilience.  Local and national implications of a case study in Grundy County, TN at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 25 in Blackman Auditorium (Woods Laboratories).

Windy Lopez is Director of Community Affairs at Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company.  In this role, she directs the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.  She leads the programmatic research and development and implementation of national initiatives designed to empower families, educators and community leaders to help support children’s literacy development.

Camp Discover and Discover Together are local efforts in which Scholastic is partnering with the South Cumberland Collaborative for Children and Families, Sewanee, and Yale University to establish local literacy, resilience, and social connectedness initiatives. 

The June 2012 pilot Camp Discover:  Me, My Community, My World … hayrides, hikes at South Cumberland State Park, singing, a visit to the Grundy County Historical Society … for 24 Tracy City, TN elementary school students in grades K–2.  They held a Camp Discover “family reunion” on October 4.  Discover Together is a family gathering place and cooperative whose first site in Tracy City opened in January.

Windy successfully helped pilot, research and expand programs such as Read and Rise™/Leer da Poder™, which now serves as an anchor program for the company’s family and community engagement platform.  As part of her work, she collaborates with a wide range of cross-sector stakeholders including university research partners, local and national non-profit and government organizations, schools, libraries, businesses as well as un-traditional education partners.

Prior to joining Scholastic in 2005, Windy was a second grade teacher at the Bronx Lighthouse Academies Charter School in New York.  While teaching there, she was instrumental in training the teaching staff on Responsive Classroom™, a teaching methodology that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in order to ensure optimal student learning.  She also taught at Hoboken Charter School in New Jersey and taught English in Madrid, Spain.

Prior to teaching, Windy worked in the public relations/communications field, focusing on cause-related and education campaigns for companies including IKEA, H&M, and McDonalds.  She holds degrees in Elementary Education and Communications from Rutgers University.

 

Karen M. Proctor is founder and principal of Harbour Workshop LLC, a boutique social innovation firm that provides strategic advice and consultation to leaders and organizations working in and with the social sector. Karen’s accomplished career has been devoted to working across the public and private sectors to address issues ranging from hunger to school reform.

Karen has been the chief social responsibility administrator and strategist for media, publishing, and sports organizations including major market radio stations, Scholastic, and the National Basketball Association. A nationally recognized leader in the social impact space, Karen has advised corporate CEOs, non-profit, and philanthropic chief executives, as well as federal and state senior level officials. Her work in service of more than 200 organizations has honed her expertise in strategic thinking and planning, program design, implementation, evaluation, and cross-sector collaboration. Karen is known for her thought-leadership and passion for producing transformational outcomes. In addition to serving as a Fellow with Babson’s Lewis Institute for Social Innovation, she also serves on the ConvergeUS Council of Innovation Advisers.

Just prior to launching Harbour Workshop, Karen was Scholastic’s Vice President of Community Affairs and Government Relations where she established and led the company’s public affairs practices. During her tenure she spearheaded enterprising national education and public policy initiatives that markedly contributed to business growth and improved educational opportunities and conditions for millions of children and families. As Director of Community Relations for the National Basketball Association, Karen served as the chief community relations consultant to NBA and WNBA clubs.

Karen’s non-profit and philanthropic sector leadership includes roles as President and Trustee of the Maurice R. Robinson Fund and Chair of the Board of Directors for New York’s Literacy Assistance Center. Karen has served on numerous governance and advisory boards. She is currently a board member of PENCIL, New York City’s public education advocacy organization.

Karen has appeared on national television and radio programs including NBC’s Today ShowCBS This Morning, and The Tavis Smiley Show (radio) and has been a featured speaker and panelist at major business and industry conferences. She is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

Psychology 430: Child, Family, and Community Development in Rural Appalachia is a new Spring 2013 course being taught collaboratively by Sewanee- and Yale-affiliated faculty and guest speakers. It is the latest development in a growing partnership between Sewanee and the Yale Child Study Center, Yale Medical School. Among the Center faculty is Linda Mayes, M.D. … Sewanee alumna … Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine … and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Psychology at Sewanee.

For many years, Dr. Mayes has offered summer internships to Sewanee students. More recently, she initiated the Sewanee-At-Yale Directed Research Program that affords Sewanee students the opportunity to spend a semester plus a summer at the Yale Child Study Center. This new course venture will offer students the combined expertise and energy of Sewanee faculty and visiting Yale-affiliated faculty and guest speakers. In addition to leading one or more course sessions, most of the visiting faculty and guest speakers will give a more public presentation open to the general community and have the opportunity to interact with various members of the Sewanee faculty and the broader community during their time in Sewanee. Thus, the course will also help to foster community-based collaborations among Sewanee and Yale faculty, University students, and local community organizations and partners.
