Neuroscience Program Hosts First Annual Brain Awareness Week on Campus

Dr. Brandy Tiernan and Dr. Kate Cammack

‌Under the direction of Dr. Brandy Tiernan (featured in photo on right, with Dr. Kate Cammack, on left), the Neuroscience program launched Sewanee's first annual Brain Awareness Week (BAW), March 21-25, 2016. The Brain Awareness Campaign is an international celebration of the brainthat brings together scientists, families, schools, and communities. This year's events included a Movie Night, in which students watched Awakenings, an Oliver Sacks biopic featuring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. Dr. Tiernan gave a brief introduction of the film and discussed important facts from the movie. The following night, students were invited to enjoy appetizers and listen to Dr. Kate Cammack deliver an interesting talk on the effects of opiate abuse on brain health. The BAW committee would like to thank all who attended the events and helped make this such successful week! Next year we look forward to open houses, neuroscience demonstrations, brain exhibitions, more lectures, displays at DuPont Library, workshops, and more! Check out the photos from the events this year below. Please contact Dr. Brandy Tiernan (bntierna@sewanee.edu) if you're interested in helping out with BAW next spring! ‌
